Actually, I am buying the CD and I am actually a frequent buyer of music, rather than pirating. I’m not saying that it’s okay, but if you actually go and fucking talk to some of these people in the bands, they’ll say “oh, yeah, well it sucks that people download our music for free, but what can we do about it?” No matter what, you’re not going to be able to stop people from illegally downloading music and all these people in the bands can hope for is that they buy the preorder packages and the CD, which is why they offer cool things like that. The music industry isn’t making money off of the actual music anymore, it’s all the added bonuses.

But because I’m just a “music fan,” I must not know what I’m talking about, right?

Coming from a current NYU music business student, you’re right on the money. Artists know their music will inevitably be downloaded for free and then compensate for their losses by selling merch at shows and touring in order to make a stable living. Very few “average listeners” buy music anymore. Yes listening to the song on its intended website would increase the number of streams, but if it’s on SoundCloud or something else similar, no money is made per stream anyway. Uploading it to tumblr is just another way to get the song out there and recognized. Free publicity. I actually love when I see new singles on tumblr because it’ll inspire me to look further into it if I enjoy what I hear in that moment.

Just do whatever you want and then purchase the album when it’s released. No need to get butthurt about one illegal download if you’re going to purchase the music and see the tour and buy the shirts in the future. Support the bands you love.

I completely agree with your points.

But that doesn’t make it acceptable.

The attitude that people have towards this is disgusting - just because it’s reality, doesn’t mean it should be acceptable. Jason Lancaster mentioned the other day that a kid asked him to sign a BURNED CD at a show - just process that for a second.

Also, I think it’s worth noting that you’re more than an average user - you’re pursuing music education, and clearly are interested past the average person. So yes, you might pursue a band further - but that doesn’t mean the average user will.

Also, “fans” fail to recognize the work put into this. Thomas put 2 months into making this a big event. TWY put a lot of effort in to make it happen on AP.net. Publicists worked their tails off to make it a big event - so for you to simply describe it as “free publicity” really demeans quite a few people’s jobs.

Again - you’re completely accurate as to the state of the music industry - I’m just sick of people being ok with it.

It’s pretttttyyyyyy disrespectful to the band for you to rip, then re-upload a song to tumblr, that isn’t even out yet. It’s even more disrespectful to steal a back-end link from a website.

Then again, you’re all “music fans,” so you probably don’t even understand that.

Excited for to attend the final MAH show, but sad to see them go.

Next week will be a weekend to remember. The day I turn 25 and the closing of a great chapter in my life.

My American Heart was everything to me. It was my world. It was really all I knew from the age 15 to today. The brothers who I created with and performed with day in and day out. The brothers I would share hotel beds with 200 days out of the year (if I was lucky enough to sleep on one). The brothers I would fight with about the littlest things. That was it for me.

Days like today I appreciate a little more. Waking up in my own bed, brewing a cup of coffee, reading e-mails and walking into my studio. This is mainly because of what I got to experience in those years of being in that band. I got to travel the world, see almost every State in the US. Before I was even 21, Visit Australia, play in Europe, Australia, and headline the UK. I even learned how to drive when I was 16 when they forced me to drive the 15 passenger van / double axel trailer in the middle of nowhere with no license.. I was scared shitless - But I learned with them.

I learned I could write songs and that I was a decent guitar player. I learned how to perform in front of crowds without analyzing every little move I made.. I learned how to just let go. And for that — I will forever be grateful.

Almost every single day I see people post “Just get back together.. Forever”. Well, I wish I could but realistically we.. Or maybe I, just can’t. I don’t have mom’s house to come back to after tour — Or have people paying for my meals and bills. I also just don’t think my mind could handle the tour life anymore (unless it was on a bus all the time). Our life on the road was special and I wouldn’t trade anything for the experiences. But we lived off of 10 dollars a day and per diems. Not as glamourous as many people think.

Anyway - I believe it’s time that I hang it up, and do it for good. I know we’ve played our farewell shows, Played a reunion and some acoustic shows, but these next two for me is it. We’ve hung on because we itch for that feeling of walking on and playing that first note and playing that last song. Honestly - that feeling of walking on stage to people who have been waiting to sing your songs back to you is better than any other I have felt in my life. But we can’t drag it on forever.

MAH will forever be inked on my skin - and I will have hundreds of stories to tell my kids (and they most likely won’t believe me). But that’s the best part. The things we saw. The things we did. I still can’t believe.

Catch us one last time and celebrate me being an old fart.
